BACKGROUND

Peace Parks Foundation is a non-profit conservation organisation that specialises in conservation at scale through the development of transfrontier conservation areas and the long-term management of key protected areas, in partnership with government conservation agencies and communities within these landscapes. We currently focus on the development of five priority transboundary landscapes measuring over 65 million hectares throughout southern Africa, and the co-management of ten national parks and protected areas covering over 5.2 million hectares.

In this role, you will provide critical support to the Counter Poaching Unit by assisting with operational co-ordination, documentation, and communication between the CPU team, park authorities, and regional rangers. You will contribute to the smooth implementation of counter-poaching strategies and security operations in Limpopo National Park. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate within a multidisciplinary team are essential. JOB PURPOSE

The Assistant Counter-Poaching Co-ordinator will work closely with and be in support of the PPF CPU team, head ranger and regional rangers based in LNP. He/she will report directly to the Counter Poaching Co-ordinator: Counter Poaching Unit, who heads up the PPF CPU team. The CPU is responsible for advising, supporting and assisting the park authorities with the implementation of their counter-poaching and security related strategy and related operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Advise, assist and support CPU Co-ordinator with the day-to-day activities of LNP counter-poaching and security operations.
Advise, assist and support the operational requirements to ensure effectiveness and efficiencies of operations are achieved.
Advise, assist, support, and mentor control of operations room.
Assist in financial oversight of cost-effective implementation of operations.
Assist and support CPU Co-ordinator with financial management responsibilities including budgets, cash flow and field rangers’ incentives.
Assist with oversight of internal quality assurance, including but not limited to all field ranger patrols, firearm handling, radio usage, training, air support and K9 operations.
Assist with the CPU project administration and reporting requirements, including monthly reports, training programme reporting, statistics, incentive scheme reporting, etc.
Assist the CPU Co-ordinator in developing, fostering and managing stakeholder engagement with all identified stakeholders to deliver both short and long-term requirements.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

A minimum of 3 years’ previous experience in counter-poaching and/or wildlife security related operations in a similar environment.
Skills in management, communication, advising, bushcraft, and basic administration are essential.
Self-driven with strong leadership and performance management.
Ability and willingness to live remotely in tented accommodation.
Fit and healthy to perform in-field field ranger duties.
Own vehicle to get to and from work in country of operation is preferable.
A working knowledge of or willingness to learn Portuguese will be an added advantage.
A non-certified fixed-wing aircraft pilot’s licence or the willingness to obtain such, in service, will be an added advantage.
